The (also known as Bharani Pattu ) refers to a highly unusual collection of ritualistic, explicit, and profane ballads sung during the annual Kodungallur Bharani Festival . These songs are performed by thousands of devotees and oracles ( Velichappadus ) at the ancient Kodungallur Sree Kurumba Bhagavathi Temple in Thrissur, Kerala.

The loud, aggressive delivery of the lyrics is believed to create a sonic force that destroys negative energies and evil spirits in the surrounding region. Kodungallur Theri Pattu Lyrics

Some of the most famous Theri Pattu verses are directed at mythical male figures—lords, kings, and even gods like Shiva. The singers mock their cowardice, impotence, or inability to control the Goddess. This is a deliberate inversion of patriarchal hierarchy, where women devotees, through the lyrics, assume the Goddess’s voice to scold cosmic and social authority.

The festival is a month-long celebration of raw and untamed 'tamasic' energy, falling between the Malayalam months of Kumbham and Meenam (March-April). The most significant day is the (defiling of the sacred grove), where hundreds of oracles (called komarams or velichappadus ), dressed in red with untied hair and brandishing swords, run wildly around the temple. They strike the temple's copper roof with sticks and throw objects into the premises as a symbolic act of pollution. It is amidst this frenzy that the Theri Pattu is sung.

  1. I only heard this for the first time a few years ago. I was pretty impressed, it’s a lot better than its rep. Pleasuredome had more peaks, like you say, but more filler too. All the cover versions midway really bring that album down for me. Guess they got sick of doing them too, judging by the Heroin story!
